VALE TIM CARMAN
1964 - 2023

Our paths first crossed in 1983. I was in my final year of the Architecture degree at UQ, Tim was commencing his first. My first recollection of Tim was of a very boyish looking guy, wearing a bandana, an ear-ring and smoking aromatic clove cigarettes. He was quiet, somewhat introspective, but seriously cool. He seemed quite popular with the girls…

I also recall some of his early student work. Using pastels and crayons to animate his sketches – bold colours energising his ideas. He struck me as a student who was prepared to find his own voice and expression, and not simply trot down the traditional path.
The Architecture School’s culture of expression and creativity transcended into many extra-curricular activities – mainly parties, but also music. Many bands were formed over the years among Architecture students.

I was in an instrumental guitar trio at the time, performing only one song at one gig per year. Deciding we needed to add a drummer, because the Beatles had one, we approached Tim. We’d seen him play in his other band and liked his driving pulsating style. In any event, he was the only drummer we knew…

We pitched the idea to him, explaining that we were a band more interested in tailoring than music, and offered him a gold Lamé jacket if he joined. Tim’s quirky sense of humour and appreciation of the odd-ball made him a good fit, and although younger than us, we quickly bonded.

To his bandmates, he became known as “Sticks”. Although, given the heavy gauge drum sticks he used and the force he hit the skins, “Stumps” might have been a more appropriate nickname. He was a loud drummer, and his playing often drowned out the guitars, much to the gratitude of most audiences…

Balancing his studies with the rigours of performing one gig per year, Tim distinguished himself as a student, graduating with Honours in 1989. He was the only member of the band to do so, thereby significantly improving the band’s Grade Point Average.
